Pink Salmon
Our original plan was to be Tuna fishing the entire month of August out of Westport. This was killing me because I know this is the best time of year to fish Salmon in Gig Harbor (my home base). I have often said that August is the reward God gives us for making it through the rest of the year here. I have so many friends and supporters in this area that I just had to make it happen.
So, We have decided to take two weeks in August and run as many trips as we can. From August 5th through the 15th Offshore Northwest Charters and Gig Harbor fishing will be one and the same with daily Salmon Charters twice daily from 6:00am to noon and from 4:00pm till dark. I expect these to fill up fast so check out Offshore Northwest and get hold of me as soon as possible.

I was out yesterday and caught a small humpy. The trick with humpies is to bleed them right away and put them on ice. Unfortunately I didn’t have any ice so I cycled the water in my cooler a couple times and kept him alive till I could clean him at the dock.
I filleted him, put him on ice and BBQed him tonight with some pineapple pepper sauce we got at Costco. It was great!!!

This is a great story.
Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to go today.
This is why I believe you have to live to the extent that you can, because you just don’t know whats going to happen.

This is a little tidbit I got from the Seattle Times. It could be good to know if your planning to fish pinks this year like I am with the kids.
• The Puget Sound Anglers of Lake Washington meeting is 6:45 p.m. June 9 at the Community Center at Mercer View, 8236 S.E. 24th St. on Mercer Island. There will be a seminar on pink salmon fishing in Puget Sound and trout fishing in Lake Washington in preparation for the Lake Washington Trout Derby on June 11. Details: 425-823-0704.

So I heard about this new two pole endorsement the WDFW is offering this year, and I was considering getting it. After all who wouldn’t want to be able to fish different rigs while fishing alone. Learning of this conjured up images of the days when you could fish multiple poles and no one cared as long as you observed the limits.
My hopes were dashed though when I learned the two pole endorsement is not for saltwater or rivers in general. The two pole endorsement is only for select lakes with the potential of it maybe being used for surplus fish “WDFW is evaluating areas and times when surplus fish may be available for harvest and the two-pole option could be allowed.” In my opinion this is not enough hope to spend $25.00 on the endorsement.
I thought I better put this out in case others were caught by surprise also.

In other action, the commission adopted dozens of new sportfishing rules that affect a variety of waters around the state. The new rules were developed with public input and discussed at the commission’s November and December meetings.
The sportfishing rules range from changing the annual opening date for wild steelhead retention on coastal streams to a new prohibition on the harvest of all species of “unclassified” marine fish and invertebrates.
However, a few rule proposals were not adopted, including a ban on the use of small lead fishing tackle at 13 lakes in Washington and a proposal that would close fishing for bottomfish and halibut off the northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula. The commission agreed to schedule additional public input during the next several months on the two proposals before acting on any proposed changes.
Also, during February’s meeting, commissioners were briefed on the Puget Sound chinook salmon harvest management plan, revenue generated by wildlife-themed personalized license plates, and the Columbia River summer chinook salmon policy.

If you have never heard of the Pebble Mine in Alaska don’t feel alone, I hadn’t either until I received an E-Mail from my friend Blake over at the Gig Harbor Fly Shop. In it Blake says they are hosting a film event at the Tides Tavern to raise awareness for the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska. These are the people trying to stop the mine. I took an hour and did some research and found that this proposed Copper, Gold and Molybdenum pit mine will be the largest in the world and probably will be visible from space. If you’ve ever seen one pit mines can be very ugly and messy and create a lot of very toxic waste. All this would be fine except they want to put it in the watershed that supports the strongest runs of wild salmon in the Pacific Rim, Bristol Bay. Here is the Link to the Gig Harbor Fly Shop blog post.
The Film event is Wednesday February 3rd and Thursday February 4th. Tickets are $5 and proceeds benefit the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska. There will be door prizes and the incredible atmosphere of the Tides Tavern. Tickets can be purchased at the Gig Harbor Fly Shop or on-line HERE. Please take a little time and Participate in this important event.

I always get exited this time of year for what I call Sow season. The Big Seattle Boat Show and the Puyallup Sportsman’s Show. Portland has a Boat show and a Sportsman Show. There are several shows in Eastern Washington, Central and Eastern Oregon and Idaho. There will be no Vancouver BC Show this year, turns out there’s something else going on. I don’t know what could be more important than the boat show but Canadians a funny like that. Finally the Tacoma Dome Boat Show is April 1st.
This year will be a little tricky for me. I try every year to make the Seattle Boat Show and the Sportsman’s Show in Puyallup every year but this year the dates overlap so I may have to pick one or the other and if I have to pick one, it has to be the Sportsman’s Show. I get excited to visit the booths and see whats new in fishing as well as try to find great deals on gear.
