Here is a link to a great article on Olympic Peninsula and Northwestern Washington rivers by Matt Schubert.
They might be putting on some color as fall salmon season winds down on the North Olympic Peninsula, but I’d be blushing, too, if droves of voyeurs looked on while I tossed out pickup lines.
Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

WDFW is seeking input on proposed rule changes for the upcoming season. The deadline for input is October 2nd. There are a lot of housekeeping changes but the big ones for this are are an opening for Minter Creek above the hatchery and reopening Purdy Creek that got closed by accident.
There is a proposed closure of all Fresh and saltwater fishing of Columbia River Smelt as well as an increase in the limit of Shiner Perch from 2 to 15 because they are bait not food fish.
You can read the proposal here or by clicking the Pictur.
You can E-Mail your suggestions to WDFW here

I was putting away all the Halibut and Lings we slayed at LaPush this year and I was left with a couple pieces of rockfish that we decided we were going to eat in a couple days. I decided this would be a good time to make a video on the “Poor Mans Vacuum Packer”.
You will want to keep the bag as strait up and down as you can to make sure you get all the air you can out.
Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery has achieved the escapement needs for this year and is not taking any additional fish into the hatchery. Surplus hatchery spring chinook are present in large numbers in Drano Lake. So in order to facilitate additional opportunity for the Yakima Nation, they will continue to fish Tuesday nights, the sport fishery will be closed Wednesdays.

Each year, thousands of Washingtonians go fishing – legally – without a license. How? By taking advantage of Free Fishing Weekend, scheduled June 12-13.
During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington state. Also, no vehicle use permit will be required during Free Fishing Weekend to park at any of the 600 water-access sites maintained by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

The Weekender is out and here it is:
Spring chinook season is picking up on the Columbia River, steelhead fishing is going full tilt on the Olympic Peninsula and a pair of razor-clam digs are tentatively scheduled late this month and next.
Those are just a few of the reasons why anglers might want to purchase a 2010-11 fishing license before their current licenses expire at midnight March 31.
“We encourage people to renew their fishing and hunting licenses early, so they’re ready to go when the next season opens,” said Bill Joplin, licensing manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). “A lot of great fishing and hunting opportunities are coming up in the next few weeks.”
Licenses may be purchased online ( https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/ ), via a toll-free phone line (1-866-246-9453) or from one of 600 authorized license sales locations around the state.

Some of you may remember the post I did on the Sportsman’s Show in Puyallup this year. One of the bright spots of the show for me was meeting Jim Mercier from a new company called Xrodz. Those of you that are familiar with Fetha Styx will recognize this name as the founder. Anyway, I have gotten a lot of questions from people and honestly a lot of traffic from people looking for information on this company so I wrote to Jim and here is what I learned. First he is the founder of Fetha Styx. he did not explain why he left but I know it became more of a production company recently. Here is what Jim said about Xrodz “We build our rodz. We don’t pretend to be anything but what we are. We firmly believe we build one of if not the finest fishing tool money can buy. We do not sell to dealers or distributors, we sell directly to the fisherman from our factory in Redmond. We invite people to come by and feel what we do. We usually have a great assortment of rodz for that exact purpose. Each rod is built for the customer and we will paint their name into the rod for no charge. We will do custom colors to match boats or themes at the customers request. Our rods straight out catch fish like none other and look very cool too.”
I only talked with him for a few minutes at the show. I received one E-Mail (almost immediately after sending my request for information). I’ve seen him on TV on Hawg Quest. I love the way he gets excited about fish and fishing. I believe him when he says he believes they build one of the finest fishing tools available. Xrodz are expensive but I don’t think he needs the money, the price is more about respecting the craftsmanship that goes into a true one off, custom made to order “fishing tool”. Overall I think Xrodz is what happens when a true artist no longer has to worry about making a living. I hope he can keep it that way.

Due to a larger than expected return of Hatchery Chinook, and after consulting with the Yakama Indian Nation, the daily limit on These fish as well as Hatchery Steelhead has been raised to two combined. this doesn’t mean two of each, it means two combined. This rule change affects the Klickitat River from the mouth to the Fisher Hill Bridge.
