One of the cool things about having a blog is it gives me a way to check in and forces me to get things done. So here is the update for this week:

Replaced brakes and bearings on the trailer. I had to run new brake lines for the axles and still need to bleed them. I may put new leaf springs in too. Haven’t decided yet.

Rocket launchers are on order and I am waiting till the boat show to purchase electronics. I purchased a new troll housing for the go-pro this year. That should make for some great tuna video. My friend John picked up a couple Tica Rod and reel combos (Chinese but for 60 bucks they are disposable). I still plan to purchase some new Avets for bait fishing but that is also waiting for the shows.

The overall theme in all this is to clear the deck and cabin of clutter so we can cover it in blood.

I will be interested to see what others are working on this winter. Please drop a comment with your projects and pictures. I know my friend Steve is replacing the deck on his boat and Tom is always working on something.

Last Saturday we had the first of two derbies in area 11. It was the South King County PSA derby and was held in area 10,11 and 13. I will post results as soon as I get them.

We caught on king about 7.5 lbs. first thing in the morning and had nothing the rest of the day.It wasn’t much but it was good for a prize. My friend Jeff scored a beautiful fillet knife set, which if you’d a seen the hatchet job he did on that fish you would appreciate. We also had a lot of fun catching herring to use for bait and test running the bait tank as we get ready for Tuna.

It seemed fishing was slow for everyone with a very few fish turned in. I believe the winner was 23ish.I will post the rest of the results when I get them.

Lets hope next Saturday is better when the Gig Harbor PSA hosts their derby. Tickets are still available and there is still time to join the chapter at the meeting this Tuesday night at the TOA in Tacoma at Titlow Beach.

It’s derby time in the South Sound and with fish as large as 45 lbs. being caught in the area I expect them to be good ones.

First next Saturday we have the 10th annual South King County PSA  Derby. This derby is held in Marine areas 10, 11 and 13 with multiple weigh in spots. There will also be events at the Point Defiance Marina put on by South King PSA, Ducks Unlimited and The Marina itself from 8am to 4pm.

The other derby is the 16th annual Gig Harbor PSA Derby on August 13th. This is a great time every year with a good turnout and plenty of fish in the 20 pound range. This year however I expect to see some in the thirties.

For more details on these and other derbies watch this blog or here:

The 2011 Olympic Peninsula Salmon Derby (or Gardner Derby as it has been called for ever) is over and Guess who won.

This years derby was great but not without some controversy. it seems a decision was made at the last minute to include area 9 and allow people to run fish up to Port Townsend to be weighed. The decision was made on the 17th and publicized on the derby web site. The argument is that if more people had known they would have fished there especially on Saturday with the north wind blowing people out of the straits.

The fact is these guys are all volunteers and they are trying to (and succeeding at) put on a great derby so don’t be to hard on them. All in all it was a good event with lots of prizes and a good time was had by everyone that wanted to. Good Job guys!!
